OUR LOVE STORY

How we met

We always say that we met by God’s grace. Neither of us planned to end up at Gordon. Nate only applied to Gordon while Shineika applied to multiple schools, and Gordon was not even on her list. But we were both invited to apply for the Clarendon Honors Program, and after many prayers and gentle nudges, Shineika felt called to accept. What felt random at the time was really divine alignment.

On the very first day of Clarendon orientation, in a small cohort of ten, our paths crossed. We were both student athletes, Nate with soccer and Shineika with track. Nate’s coach was strict, and he often could not attend full orientation sessions, which unintentionally became the beginning of our bond, two students trying to juggle demanding academic requirements with the intensity of athletics. Shineika naturally began to empathize with Nate’s situation and cared for him in small but meaningful ways.

Our cohort was required to take a class together. That classroom became the birthplace of our connection. We would engage in deep, passionate discussions about politics, Christianity, and the world. Those conversations were challenging, energizing, and transformative. By spring semester, we had become the best of friends. Our friendship was pure, strong, and completely unexplainable, something that felt more like purpose than coincidence.

During spring break of that year, we traveled to the Caribbean together. Nate challenged Shineika not to bring her bag of textbooks and instead be fully present on the island. It was there, surrounded by peace and warmth, that Shineika first allowed herself to imagine forever with someone. Not necessarily with Nate in that moment, but for the first time in her life she opened her heart to the possibility of love, partnership, and a shared future.

At some point, Shineika’s matron of honor and Nate’s groomsman created cohort couples for the group and paired Shineika and Nate together. Even though others saw a connection, we both immediately shut down the idea. We insisted that it was unacceptable and focused solely on being best friends.

It was not until junior year that Shineika stopped and wondered if their friendship could be something more. She spent time praying and fasting, and at one point, had a dream about Nate being someone for her in a romantic way. She freaked out and shut it down. Eventually, she reached out to Nate, convinced that the dream might mean he could feel the same way and that she needed to tell him it could never happen. When Nate followed up and asked, “What did you have to tell me?” Shineika responded, “Honestly, it’s complicated at this point.” Nate reassured her that it was okay to tell him, but Shineika couldn’t. He encouraged her, saying, “You’re my closest friend. You know you can be straight up with me,” but all Shineika could say was, “I’ll tell you another time.” Nate could not let it go and followed up again, assuring her he already knew what it was about, so she did not need to say it. Shineika chose to remain silent, scared that speaking it might make it true.

Through all of this, Shineika loved how they remained friends,  comfortable, supportive, and deeply invested in each other’s journey. They knew each other’s darkest secrets, struggles, strengths, and fears, all purely through friendship without anything else attached.
Throughout college, we built a foundation that God was quietly shaping into something much greater. We led an organization called Dear Neighbor together, focusing on racial reconciliation, and created and participated in a series called Cuffing Season on diverse relationships, unknowingly preparing for the life God was orchestrating for us.

We graduated and remained in touch, always caring and present in each other’s lives. What began as a divine coincidence became the foundation of a love rooted in purpose, friendship, and God’s gentle leading.

Fast forward to

In January 2024, Shineika checked in on Nate for the New Year, and he suggested they catch up over FaceTime. They stayed up all night talking and continued texting afterward. Eventually, the texting slowed down, mostly due to Shineika’s “horrible texting skills,” but in March, they reconnected again when they both attended Shineika’s matron of honor’s wedding at Aria. Amid the laughter, dancing, and celebration, they picked up right where they left off, and Nate began to wonder if their story was meant to be more than just a long-term friendship.

In April, Nate reached out after Shineika posted on Snapchat about a book she was reading, Finding Me by Viola Davis. At the time, Shineika was finishing a fast, reflecting on her relationship with the Lord, and letting go of certain things in her life, including potential romantic relationships. Two weeks after she had made that decision, Nate messaged her about the book, and their conversations quickly turned into pure, innocent discussions about the books they were reading. Shineika’s cousin and close friends teased her one day when they overheard her giggling while texting, asking, “Who are you texting?” She replied, “My friend,” and they laughed about it.

That thought of a potential future together lingered for Nate and eventually turned into action a few weeks later. While in NYC, he spoke with one of the groomsmen about seeing Shineika at the wedding. He was told that everyone but him had known since freshman year in college that they needed to be together and was asked, “What are you waiting for?”
A few weeks later, on the first weekend of May, Nate hopped on a train from Boston to New London, joking that he was coming to “visit Shineika’s chickens.” In reality, he wanted to see where she had built her life and maybe, just maybe, find a place in it himself. That weekend, Nate met Shineika’s family and community, attending a baby shower and meeting her cousins, grandmother, and church family. Everyone kept asking if they were a couple, and Shineika quickly denied it, but Nate secretly hoped those questions might one day be true.

The next evening, after a day of museums and record shops with Shineika’s friends, Nate and Shineika shared dinner together. Nate was nervous, his heart racing as he prepared to share what he had been holding inside. He could not muster the courage to fully express his feelings yet. After dinner, they went to a private downtown venue with a pool table, away from public view. It was there that Nate poured his heart out. He told Shineika he wanted to move from friendship to exploring a romantic relationship. He explained that he had done healing work and expressed that he saw a future with her, but wanted to make sure Shineika felt the same.

Shineika, overwhelmed and panicking, said she needed space to think about everything. The conversation happened less than an hour before Nate had to catch the train back to Dorchester. Though physically apart afterward, spiritually Shineika felt it all made sense. They parted ways that night, agreeing to discuss it further later.

Exactly one month later, on June 5, Nate asked Shineika to be his girlfriend.

The proposal

Nate had been carefully planning the proposal for months, adjusting details along the way. One morning, Shineika called him with a surprising revelation, she had dreamt about when he would propose. Her intuition was spot on, and Nate had to change his plans to keep the moment a surprise.

With the help of Shineika’s closest friends, her family, and Nate’s family, everything came together over the July 4th weekend. Nate had chosen a ring crafted by the same jeweler who made his mother’s and grandmother’s rings, weaving their family legacy into this new chapter. While the women enjoyed a girls’ outing, the men and Shineika’s friends prepared the setting: the Connecticut College Arboretum, followed by a dinner at the Thames Club, the very place where their romantic journey began.

That evening, Shineika dressed for what she thought was a “family dinner with photos before.” But the elegance of her outfit hinted that she knew something more was in store. Nate, his brother, and his mom drove with her to the arboretum. As they arrived, his brother cleverly pretended to leave his phone behind, giving Nate and Shineika a moment alone.

Walking down the main entrance, Shineika was greeted with a trail of photos capturing their relationship, leading to a breathtaking setup overlooking flowers and the pond. There, Nate poured out his heart once again, dropped to one knee, and asked Shineika to marry him.

She said yes.

In that instant, Nate’s groomsmen, who had encouraged him to take the leap just a year earlier, emerged from behind the scenes, cameras in hand to capture the joy. The celebration continued with family and friends at the Thames Club, bringing their love story full circle to the place where it all began.
